Right now he has handed over the artifact and allowed himself to be escorted out with the rest of the Nein, following this drow -- this Shadowhand -- who has taken it upon himself to guide them to retrieve Veth's husband.
That's where he is physically at least. Mentally he is straining and hammering at the door that refuses to open for him. Let him in. Let him reach out and find his shadow. If they're still connected, if he's still there, Caleb's heart aches so sharply he fears it will cease beating entirely.
It's no use. The shared space will not open to him, and he finds himself fighting back the urge to collapse to his knees and sob. So long, it's been so long. Could the other half of his soul still be out there? Still be his?
