[Even in wolf form, Bren understood that something had fundamentally changed in him, in the full moon, in the change and in being the monster. Something had settled, finally knowing a sense of safety and surety in himself, in all parts of himself. Essek continued to shower him in gifts.
When the moon finally set, when the change released its hold on him, and the wolf once more became a man. Normally exhaustion took hold of Bren and dragged him into a sleep that was inescapable when the transformation ended, and he was lucky to drag himself to a corner or a hole to recover in. Not tonight though. Oh the exhaustion was there, but he was already curled safe and warm in bed beside his mate. Bren could feel himself drifting, and normally that would be the end of the night.
Tonight though, tonight the moment after he was human shaped once more, after Bren's eyes closed, they opened once more. A smile pulled over his features, soft and affectionate, more visible in clear blue eyes than anywhere else. Maybe Essek would notice the slight difference in that expression, the same as ever, but more settled somehow.
Caleb Widogast smiled at his husband, lifting a hand, fingers that ached with the strain of the transformation but would not be stopped from touching along Essek's cheek.]
